In many ways 3-D and 2-D modelling can be likened to one another, this is because they share many of the same construction techniques.
3-Dimensional images are generated on a computer and create the illusion of depth and perspective by using intricate shading details, making objects look spherical and proportionate; they can give the illusion of light and movement. Mark Cumbor describes CGI in the following way:
“Creating a virtual object (model) in 3D space on a computer. This object can then be painted, manipulated and made to interact with other objects to produce animations, effects or photo realistic still images.”
Computer Generated Imagery is used for a variety of projects today in many different ways, for instance it can be used to create lifelike and believable images or alternatively it can be used to create outright animation such as the kind used by Disney Pixar. 3-D modelling can also be used to create still pictures as shown in our examples of work by Mark Cumbor, a new recruit to the eCommWeb team, or it can be used to create animation and moveable objects.
3-Dimensional modelling can be used for many things and is utilised in many industries today.
The medical industry uses 3-D modelling in order to facilitate operations, scans etc. 3-D models are also used to create detailed images of organs.

The film industry uses 3-Dimensional modelling to produce 3-D animations on screen both for films and animated films. 3-Dimensional modelling is so advanced now that it can be used to recreate objects and people that aren’t really on screen without the audience even having to suspend disbelief.
3-Dimensional modelling is and has been used in the computer gaming industry for a long time, helping to create realistic and remarkable illustrations on screen in order to capture and maintain the participant’s attention. |
The architecture and building industry make use of 3-D modelling when producing designs, helping them to think of flaws and put their models in perspective in terms of planning.
In other words the list of possibilities for the employment of CGI or 3-Dimensional modelling is endless.
